"Grant Park Orchestra: A Tibetan Mozart Requiem"

This is the third major area performance of the Robert Levin completion of the unfinished Mozart “Requiem” during this 250th Mozart anniversary year, but the first one to include Tibetan Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery in between some of the Mass sections with their unique throat-resonating style of singing that produces a three-octave range of overtones distinct enough to produce chords in a single voice. The idea is to juxtapose a seminal Western masterpiece on death and resurrection with chanted Buddhist texts that deal with the same themes from the “Tibetan Book of the Dead.” Levin himself will be on hand both to discuss how he put together his performing edition of the Requiem from the torso of the piece left behind by Mozart at 6:30pm in the Choral Room before the Saturday performance, and to perform as soloist with his own cadenzas in his own edition of the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 25, K. 503 both Friday and Saturday.
