Chicago enacts smoking ban

Chicago today banned smoking in restaurants starting January 16th. We've now joined New York, Los Angeles, and a number of other cities that also ban smoking in some public places. Reports the Tribune:

Smoking is allowed in freestanding bars and taverns, and within 15 feet of any restaurant bar, until July 1, 2008. A tavern is defined as an establishment that earns at least 65 percent of its revenues from liquor sales.

Smoking was banned in all bars in Connecticut a few months before we left. This was wonderful as we could take our baby out to the corner bar with us while we had a burger.

I'm surprised that smoking is only banned in restaurants in Chicago. It seems a little backwards, like they should be banning smoking in bars already.

As progressive as Switzerland is, most restaurants don't even have a nonsmoking section, so we rarely go out to dinner. It's frustrating and you find yourself evaluating the people near you to figure out whether they're going to light up or not. There's only one place in Basel I know of where I can go out for coffee because they have a nonsmoking section. It's sad, really.
